TechPlace Opens World-Class Composites Manufacturing and Layup Facility at Brunswick Landing

March 05, 2019

On February 13th, TechPlace, a business technology incubator located at Brunswick Landing in Brunswick, ME, hosted an open house for its recently completed Composites Manufacturing and Layup facility. Grant funding for the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority (MRRA) project was provided by the Maine Technology Institute and the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Economic Development Administration, as well as MRRA’s own matching funds. The facility was created as an asset for the State of Maine in support of its composites industry.

The Composites Layup facility joins the Composites Engineering Research Laboratory for Testing, R&D, Materials Analysis and Polymer Characterization labs to make it the largest composites manufacturing area in the Northeast. The 2,600-square-foot composites layup area, part of an overall 5,000-square-foot area devoted to that type of work, is open to any business to use, with preference to those in residence at TechPlace. Several companies have already begun using the space.

The $1 million layup facility in TechPlace is the latest piece of the campus's growing manufacturing incubator, which houses 38 businesses and has 95,000 square feet of shared offices, manufacturing spaces and prototype labs that support the composite materials industry, aerospace, biotechnology, cleantech and information technology firms. The facility provides a cost-effective solution for manufacturing startups that would otherwise find these production spaces too costly.

The TechPlace composites facility was developed to support state-of-the-art composite manufacturing via a temperature and humidity-controlled layup room and two composite ovens suitable to manufacture aerospace quality components.
